About Mr Ben Cresswell
As a Consultant General Surgeon with over 25 years of clinical practice, I am one of the most experienced specialists in Liver, Pancreas and Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) surgery in the Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire area.
Having previously worked in London and Surrey, for the past 15 years I have been a Consultant Surgeon at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, providing advanced, evidence-based care for patients with both routine and highly complex surgical needs.
My practice philosophy is simple: personalised care, honest advice, and the highest possible standards of safety.
I take time to ensure that every patient understands their condition and the full range of treatment options available—and I only recommend surgery when it is genuinely the best approach for you.
Training & Specialist Expertise
My surgical training spans some of the most respected centres across Scotland, London and the South East of England, where I had the privilege of working with internationally recognised leaders in liver and pancreatic surgery.
To deepen my expertise further, I also spent time during my early consultant career at world-renowned centres in the USA and Japan, gaining specialist exposure to complex hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) techniques, that I have brought back to enhance the quality of care I provide in the UK.
My practice consists entirely of specialist work for diseases of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bile duct and hernias. I also perform surgery for minor skin conditions, such as lipomas, cysts and moles / skin cancers along with upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy). I do not operate outside my scope of practice, as I feel strongly that outcomes are linked to experience and training, so to offer you the best results, I concentrate on what I do best.
This combination of UK and international experience allows me to offer patients a comprehensive, modern and highly informed surgical approach, often taking on cases that have been turned down in other units.

Within Hampshire Hospitals, I serve as a Medical Director and have previously held various senior leadership roles over the last 12 years, including responsibilities as Director of Surgery, Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Cancer Care.
I currently oversee:
- safe and effective use of clinical resources
- development and delivery of innovative, high-quality services
- maintenance of professional and ethical standards across departments
Nationally, I also support the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman as a National Specialty Advisor, helping ensure fairness, safety and accountability in healthcare delivery.
Academic & Professional Leadership
Alongside my clinical practice, I maintain an active academic portfolio, with a doctorate-level postgraduate research degree and an appointment as a Professor of Surgery at St Georges' International Medical School underpinning this interest:

- Regular reviewer for multiple surgical and oncology journals
- Clinical Editor for Surgery Journal
