Non-Stone Related Gallbladder Pain (Biliary Dyskinesia)
What Is Biliary Dyskinesia?
Biliary dyskinesia is a condition where the gallbladder or bile ducts don’t work properly, even though no stones are present. It can cause pain very similar to gallstone attacks.
Diagnosis requires careful assessment by a specialist experienced in liver and biliary disorders.
Types of Biliary Dyskinesia
1. Gallbladder Dysfunction
The gallbladder doesn’t contract properly, leading to spasms and pain after eating. Patients often develop a fear of food and may lose weight. Diagnosis is made with a HIDA scan, which measures how well the gallbladder empties.
2. Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction
This affects the small muscular valve controlling bile flow into the intestine. When it doesn’t relax properly, bile backs up, causing pain and sometimes abnormal blood tests.
When Should It Be Considered?
If your symptoms sound typical for gallstones but no stones are seen on scans, the possibility of biliary dyskinesia should be considered.
Proper diagnosis is essential — surgery or procedures should only be offered when the cause is clearly identified, as unnecessary treatment carries risk without benefit.
